On Saturday, there were reports of heavy gunfire and explosions in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan. The tension between the army and a powerful paramilitary group had been building up for several days, leading to this violent outburst.
The shooting and blasts were concentrated around the army headquarters and the defense ministry in central Khartoum, resulting in columns of smoke rising from different parts of the city.
The situation was serious enough for soldiers to be deployed on the streets.
Witnesses reported confrontations and loud explosions and gunfire near a base held by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in south Khartoum. The RSF issued a statement claiming that the army had laid siege to paramilitaries in the Soba area of Khartoum, launching a sweeping attack with heavy and light weapons.
On the other hand, a spokesperson for the Sudanese army stated that it was the paramilitary troops who had attacked military bases.
Brigadier-General Nabil Abdallah said that fighters from the Rapid Support Forces had attacked several army camps in Khartoum and other parts of Sudan, leading to ongoing clashes.
However, he also emphasized that the army was committed to safeguarding the country and would continue to fulfill its duty.
