Bengali New Year, also known as Pohela Boishakh, is an auspicious occasion that marks the beginning of the lunisolar calendar. This year, it will be celebrated on April 15. Poila Boishakh is observed on April 14 in Bangladesh and April 15 in the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, Jharkhand, and Assam's Barak Valley.
Apart from its cultural and traditional significance, this day holds great economic importance as the Bengali business community commences its fiscal year on this day.
The roots of Pohela Boishakh can be traced back to the Mughal era, where the Muslim community of Old Dhaka celebrated this occasion, along with Akbar's tax reforms.
According to the Drikpanchang, this celebration of the Bengali era began in 594, and it is credited to King Shoshangko of ancient Bengal.
This day is celebrated with much fanfare and enthusiasm, where people exchange greetings and wishes with their loved ones.
